Susan
Hanley, RN, FACCE, Director of the Catawba County Parenting Network (CCPN), has
involved herself with educating and assisting mothers, women, children and parents
since her first years in the workforce as a registered nurse in New York City.
By organizing and directing the inception of several organizations and working
with leading directors and facilities to address women's and children's health
and wellness and parenting education issues, Susan has been recognized as a leader
several times over by her colleagues and state representatives. Susan now
works as the Director of the CCPN, an organization she founded dedicated to ensuring
that Catawba County's parents have the support and education needed to secure
better futures for their children. The formation of the Network began when the
Catawba County Partnership for Children (Smart Start), in establishing local Smart
Start-funded services, recognized that parents needed a primary portal of entry
to access available parenting services and resources. In 1999, responding to the
need for service coordination and the result of three community task forces (Children's
Summit, Family Violence Task Force and the BEH Task Force), the Partnership for
Children created and funded the Parent Resource Coordinator position specifically
for Susan. With her background and familiarity with local agencies, Susan combined
the services of 25 partnering organizations into a strong community collaboration.,
"Mrs. Hanley has shown great determination in crafting a customer-friendly
network that provides a wide variety of programs that respond to the diversity
of need," said Libby Throckmorton, Partnership for Children program manager,
in nominating Susan for the 2001 Leadership for a Changing World Award. "Not
only does Mrs. Hanley have a thorough understanding of each program involved [with
CCPN], but she also strives to meet personally with as many parents as possible
to gain an understanding of their needs, counsel them about parenting programs
most appropriate for them, and to learn more about how the Network can evolve
and adapt to serve more families," said Throckmorton. While being
a strong community advocate for women, children and parents, Susan also devoted
her time and energy to her family. Since her husband's death in 1995, she has
been a single mother raising four children. "They are the accomplishments
I am most proud of," Susan said of her two boys and two girls. View
