Prevent
Child Abuse Virginia is a statewide, private nonprofit organization.
PCAV serves families and organizations which work with families
in several ways: through direct service programs; with educational
opportunities for individuals, families and professionals;
through awareness activities and by serving as advocates
for children and families.
Forty-eight Community Partner organizations serve over
106 Virginia localities. Public awareness materials produced
by PCAV are used in every city and county in Virginia. We
are a member of the National Family Support Roundtable and
the Virginia Chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America/Healthy
Families America.
- Direct service programs include:
Health Families Virginia - PCAV coordinates this
statewide system of support for all new parents. Families
can choose from a variety of services including - for
the most overburdened families - a home visitor who will
stay with the family beginning before the child is born
and continuing until the child enters school. There are
currently 38 Healthy Families sites service 87 communities.
Hugs and Kisses - This play was developed to
teach elementary school children to keep safe from sexual
abuse. Produced in conjunction with Theatre IV of Richmond,
the play reaches over 50,000 students each year.
Training and technical assistance - for organizations
with Circle of Parents parent-led support groups and
The Nurturing Parenting Programs.
1-800-CHILDREN - A toll-free information and
support line provides a listening ear to parents and
professionals across Virginia.
- Educational opportunities include:
Training - professional/volunteer education and
leadership development for community partner organizations.
- Awareness activities include:
Child Abuse Prevention Month - Prevent Child Abuse
Virginia coordinates the statewide observance each April.
Family Resource Center - Parenting information
organized by subject, sample parenting curricula, the
latest research on parenting information and a video-lending
library. A catalog can be downloaded from our website.
- Advocacy activities include:
Providing up-to-date objective, scientifically grounded
information to public policy makers on the local and state
levels.
Maintaining a grassroots network of advocates who care
about the welfare of children and families.
