The Center for Hope and Healing

Michele is a Certified Child Life Specialist with a degree in Psychology Child Life from Utica College of Syracuse University. She has 18 years of experience working with children and families in diverse settings and has provided both direct service and administration of programs. She began working with the Family Nurturing Center of CNY, Inc. in the implementation of Nurturing Parenting Programs in 1987 and became a nationally recognized trainer/consultant in 2004.

She currently works in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk, Va. where she serves on the Palliative Care and Pain Management committees.

Prior to moving to Virginia she helped to develop and implement the CompassionNet Program, a family support and pediatric palliative care program serving a 36 County region in New York State. CompassionNet provides services to children with potentially life-threatening illnesses and their families, with the goal(s) of improving quality of life and reducing stress regardless of the outcome of the illness. She provided leadership in the planning process for five (5) All-Inclusive Care for Children Coalitions in the Southern Tier, Central NY, Mohawk Valley and Northern New York State Regions.

Some of her most meaningful experiences occurred while providing Child Life interventions in an inpatient unit at University Hospital's Center for Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders. She has made a commitment to helping children heal through the use of play and has provided presentations and workshops throughout the country on the benefits of play and expressive activities in supporting children who have experienced loss, illness or grief. She recently completed training in implementation of the Initiative for Pediatric Palliative Care (IPPC) curriculum designed to enhance communication and build partnerships between healthcare providers and families with children who have potentially life-threatening illness.

As Director of Prevention Education and Counseling Services for the Herkimer County Prevention Council at Catholic Charities and Integrated County Planning Project Coordinator, she provided leadership for integration of County services and community asset building as a part of New York State Office of Children and Family Service's statewide initiative. She also responded to the needs of sexually abused children and their non-offending family members, as a member of the interdisciplinary team for the tri-county Sexual Abuse Task Force in Oneida, Herkimer and Madison Counties (NYS).

She is co-author of the The Nurturing Program for Parents and Their Children with Health Challenges and looks forward to the piloting and publication of this unique curriculum.
