Substance Abuse Programs

Raising children can be one of the most enjoyable and exciting adventures of life.  Being responsible for the health and welfare of young life is a tremendous responsibility requiring dedication, empathy, competence in nurturing parenting skills, and the ability to create a safe and trusting environment. Clearly, all these characteristics are compromised when parents have alcohol and drug problems. Research has clearly pointed out the relationship between alcohol and drug problems, and the high incidence of family dysfunction. Nothing can destroy a family like parents suffering with alcohol and drug problems. It is one of the sad realities of family life.

In addition, when adults drink alcoholic beverages in the presence of children, children are learning by observation and experience certain alcohol-related role models.  Some of these role models are definitely more negative than others.  In some families, children learn that when adults drink, they usually get drunk.  Being drunk, unfortunately, also equates to verbal, emotional, physical and even sexual abuse. Lack of supervision and outright physical neglect of young children are other unfortunate outcomes. The drinking models presented by adults often play a significant role in the types of drinking or non-drinking behaviors children will choose to follow in their lifetime.
