Nurturing Program for Parents and Their Children with Health Challenges™ NEW

Program Description – Group Based  but can be adapted to Home Based

  • Eight 2 hour sessions meet one day a week for 8 weeks.
  • Parents and children meet concurrently in two separate groups.
  • Two facilitators run parents’ group; two facilitators run the children’s group.
  • Parents and children engage in a 30-minute Nurturing Time (Program Family Time)  with games, songs, snacks and more.
  • Designed for School-Age children but can be modified

Methods – Adults

  • Group Work:  Brainstorming, Role-play, Suggestion circle.
  • Experiential Learning Activities: Art Activities, Visualization, Internal review.
  • Family Time:  Program and Home:  Snack, Sharing Weekly activity, Family Home Practice Assignment.
  • Home Practice Assignments and Review Parent Handbook – Worksheets, Reading.

Session Topics - Adults

Orientation; Assessing Parenting Strengths; Parenting; Family Structure; Grief and Loss; Personal Power and Independence; Discipline; Health and Healing; Feelings and Needs; Communication and Stress; Closure and Celebration

Methods – Children

  • Social/Emotional:  Expressive and Dramatic Play – Puppets, Story time, Cooperative Play – Hello Time, Circle Time
  • Physical:  Sensory Stimulation – Art Activities, Visualizations, Large and Small Motor Activities – Games, Relays, Art Projects, * Brain Gym – PACE Tune-up
  • Cognitive:  Assimilation and accommodation of new information related to health care, grief and loss concerns – Circle time 
  • Creative:  Art activities, Music – Song and Dance

Understanding Change; Praise and Self-Esteem; Personal Power & Independence;
Hope and Healing; Understanding and Expressing Anger; Expressing Worry and Stress; Saying Good-Bye; Celebration
