Evidence Based Nurturing Programs

Nurturing Program for Prenatal Families®

The Prenatal Program® is a nine-session group-based program (each session 2 1/2 hours). Parents learn ways to bond with their baby by examining the adjustments to being pregnant, discussing the physical and emotional changes occurring, strengthening the bonds between the partners, learning ways to nurture oneself, and preparing for parenthood.

Parents also examine their parenting attitudes, learn non-hitting ways of discipline, practice infant massage, and develop their empathic awareness of their needs and their infants' needs.

Nurturing Program for Parents and their Infants, Toddlers and Preschoolers®

This is a 48-session home-based or 24-session group-based program. Parents learn about recognizing and understanding feelings, infant and child massage, nurturing parenting routines, alternatives to hitting, child development, and ways to build self-esteem and self-concept in self and children.

Nurturing Program for Parents and Their School-Age Children 5-11 Years®

This is a 15-session group-based program. Parents and children increase their empathy, learn nurturing ways to encourage appropriate behaviors, build self-concept and self-esteem, and learn to have fun as a family. This program was validated twice in each of six sites around the country with families identified as abusive and neglecting.

Nurturing Program for Parents and Adolescents®

This is a 12-session group-based program. Families learn nurturing communication strategies, how to recognize each other's needs, how to understand the period of adolescence, and ways to build their own personal power, self-esteem, and self-concept.

Families also discuss pregnancy delay, sex, sexuality, AIDS, suicide, and peer pressure. Parents and teens from throughout the country participated in the validation process.

Nurturing Program for Teen Parents and their Children®

A 50-session home-based or 26-session group-based program. Teen parents learn about male and female children's brain development, infant and child massage, developmental milestones of growth, how to have fun with their children, nurturing parenting routines, and ways to help children build their self-esteem and self-concept.

Teens also learn ways to delay pregnancy, handle peer pressure, sex, sexuality, and date rape, increase personal power, understand stress, anger, criticism and confrontation, and build their own positive feelings of self. This program was validated by 12 agencies throughout the country providing services to teen parents.

The Nurturing Program for Parents and Their Children with Health Challenges®

The Nurturing Program for Parents and Their Children with Health Challenges® has been designed to offer support to families as they navigate the uncharted waters of parenting when a child is born or diagnosed with a life-altering illness. It is designed to help families explore their hopes and fears, develop effective parenting techniques, enhance communication, develop strategies for facing challenges, and recognize opportunities for celebration. The goal is to develop a foundation of cooperation that will carry families through challenging times and create opportunities for growth regardless of the outcome of the illness.

Nurturing Skills for Military Families™

Nurturing America’s Military Families is a Nurturing Skills Parenting Program specifically designed to improve the nurturing parenting skills of parents in the military with children ages birth to 11 years old. Parents and Parent Educators work cooperatively in tailor making parenting programs that meet the assessed needs of the families. The flexibility in the structure of the Lesson Guide makes it possible for parent educators to meet the demands military families face in short notice deployments, long term deployments, changes in schedules, relocation to other bases.

Family Nurturing Camp™

Family Nurturing Camp is a structured therapeutic weekend camp experience designed to help families build caring, positive family life interaction patterns.

Family Nurturing Camp is an ideal supplement to parenting education programs for families experiencing or at high risk for child abuse and neglect.  It is also appropriate for families who are at risk for foster care placement or returning from out-of-home placement.

School Based Programs

The ABC's of Parenting - A School Based Program for Parents and Children Entering Kindergarten

Revised and updated. This seven-session parenting program for parents and children entering kindergarten offers parents ways to increase their child's self-esteem and self-concept. Parents and children meet in separate groups for two hours, once weekly for seven consecutive weeks.

This is an innovative community based training program designed to increase the awareness of parents and professionals about the effects of alcohol and substance abuse on parenting and the quality of family life.

Substance Abuse Programs

Families in Substance Abuse Treatment and Recovery is an 18 session program designed specifically for families in recovery. It is built on the principles of relational development consisting of three factors essential for healthy relationships: authenticity, mutuality and empathy.

Alcohol, Anger and Abuse is a five part parenting-training program addressing alcohol related family dysfunction. The sessions address the relationship between alcohol, anger and abuse; the similarities between alcohol abuse and child abuse;  and the role alcohol has in incestuous family relationships, spousal violence, and emotional abuse of children.

Culturally Focused Programs

African-American Families

Enhancing Nurturing Parenting Skills in African American Families is a supplement to any of the Nurturing Programs. The program has four content areas with four 1-1/2 to 2 hour activities for a total of 32 hours of education.

African-American parents discuss difference and its place in America, spirituality and the importance of the Black Church, the slave experience and how it has influenced Black parenting patterns, ways to transcend oppression, how to teach a dual consciousness, and teaching children to access resources.

Christian Parenting Program

"Nurturing God's Way" Parenting Program for Christian Families, written by Sue Laney and Nancy McClure, is a parenting program designed specifically for parents who utilize the scripture of the Bible to guide their parenting attitudes and practices. This cultural adaptation of the Nurturing Parenting Program® incorporates the basic philosophy of nurturing parenting while assisting parents in strengthening their relationship with God, modeling Christian principles and building a nurturing Christian family lifestyle.
