NREPP Update 7-8-08
Nurturing Parenting Programs are evidence based validated programs with over 30 published articles and reports.
Evidence Based Programs (EBP) is a term instituted by the National Registry of Effective Programs and Practices (NREPP), a branch of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). In the past, programs were classified with labels such as Exemplary, Model, Promising, and Inadequate Evidence. The web site listing this classification scheme was replaced in 2007 with the new site listing the programs without labels, using descriptors of the type of evidence the program has obtained. This requires all programs to be re-evaluated using the new criteria. The process, however, is taking a very long time to complete. As of July 1, 2008, a limited number of programs have been reviewed. The Nurturing Parenting programs are evidenced-based programs and are on the list to be re-reviewed. The new site can be found under www.nrepp.samhsa.gov.
The first Nurturing Parenting Program was developed and validated in 1983 through a federal grant from the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH). The R&D (Research and Development) project targeted parents and their school-age children 4 to 12 years identified by Child Protective Services (CPS) as abusive and/or neglecting or high risk for abuse/neglect. The project was implemented in cities located in six different states: Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The data showed that 80 of the 100 families completed the 15 week program with significant pre-posttest improvements in parenting attitudes, knowledge, family interaction patterns, and aspects in their personality. Longitudinal follow up months later found a recidivism rate of only 7% compared to a national average of 35% to 80%.

Since 1983, additional Nurturing Parenting Programs for parents and their children of different ages, cultures, races and capabilities have been researched with the same level of scientific validity. Nearly 30 published studies and reports have supported the Nurturing Parenting Programs as evidenced based, validated family approaches for the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect.
The Nurturing Parenting programs are recognized by SAMHSA, the National Registry of Effective Parenting Programs (NREPP), the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), and other state and federal agencies as evidenced based parenting programs.
